JOB SUMMARY: To perform an extensive number of data collection functions as delegated by the physician to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions and to do so in a way that instills patient confidence in the treatment. Demonstrate ophthalmic assistant skills or ophthalmic technician skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

assistant position -  High school diploma or equivalent and desirous of two-years experience in ophthalmology

technician position - Two to three years experience as an ophthalmic technician

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication & Patient Care
• Acquaint all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
• Obtain patient history to include chief compliant, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.


Assistant position -

1.  Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: visual fields, Matrix, HRT, OCT, Fundus Photos and Topography

2. Triage
• Determine which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated. Escort patients from the waiting room for the data collection. Following testing, advise as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during the wait.
• Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
• Communicate with ophthalmic assistant to facilitate proper patient flow.

3. Administrative
• Check calibration of equipment and make adjustments or calls for service, as necessary.
• Perform other duties, as required.
 

• Technician position -

1. Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include measuring and recording of: visual acuity, measure and record glasses, manifest refraction for distance and near vision, tonometry, pupils, schirmer testing, dilate patient, color screening, administer Humphrey visual field, perform OCT, auto refraction, auto keratometry, manual keratometry, glare testing, non-cataract tonometry, A-scan and fundus photography.
Assist in the performance of complex clinical procedures requiring special assistance. Involved in direct patient care to include: changing of dressings, instilling of eye drops and ointments. Administer oral medications; instruct in home care; clean, instill, and remove patients' contact lenses.
Assist physician with other minor surgery.

2. Administrative
• Keep exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms clean. Prepare patients' charts for appointments. Calculate intraocular lens powers for surgery. Prepare lenses, wall charts, and pre-surgical summaries for surgery.

3. Triage
• Determine which patients should be taken next from the waiting room to have treatment initiated. Escort patients from waiting room to the treatment room.
• Following work-up, advise patients of who will see them next, and make patients comfortable during their wait. Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician.
• Communicate with ophthalmic assistant to facilitate proper patient flow.
• Perform other duties as required.

 Responsibilities 

1.       Obtains a medical history from each patient which is used to formulate a potential diagnosis by the ophthalmologist.

2.       Performs diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, Schirmer tests, pupil assessment, manual keratotomy, lensometry, stereo testing, blood pressure/heart rate, color vision testing with color plates, D-15 Farnsworth and automated Munsell 100 Hue and Visual field testing with the Amsler Grid, automated perimeter, refractometry and automated tonometry.

3.       Administers topical ophthalmic medication.

4.       Instructs the patients regarding testing procedures.

5.       Reports equipment malfunction and safety hazards, and ensures an adequate inventory of consumables and supplies for designated work area.

6.       Instructs patients in ophthalmic conditions and treatment plans.

7.       May perform additional advanced diagnostic testing of Goldmann visual fields, flicker fusion, contrast sensitivity, corneal topography, pachymetry, and ultrasonography.

8.       May assist in providing training to other ophthalmic personnel as assigned.

9.       Assists with laser procedures and ophthalmic procedures in the minor procedure room.

10.   Provides patient education including instructing patients of ophthalmic conditions and treatment plans; and teaching methods of contact lens insertion, removal, and care.

11.   Performs additional intermediate diagnostic testing of retinoscopy, manual (applanation, indentation) tonometry, axial length measurements, and IOL power computation. 

 Qualifications 

1.       Two years of experience working in an allied health profession position in ophthalmology, or one year work experience and a JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA); and a Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card, or obtain one within one month of employment is required. Demonstrated effective human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

2.       If the COA certification is NOT completed at the time of hire, the certification must be completed within one year of employment.

3.       The JCAHPO certification as a COA requires one of the following:

4.       JRCOMP approved educational experience with one year experience.

5.       Completion of a home study course with one year experience.

6.       Completion of a JRCOMP approved education program (completed more than three years ago) plus 18 hours of JCAHPO approved continuing education credits with one year of experience.

7.       JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) is preferred
